#  Prof. Evelyn Hammonds Featured in Smithsonian Magazine

Barbara Gutmann Rosenkrantz Professor of the History of Science and Professor of African and African American Studies [Evelynn Hammonds](/people/evelynn-hammonds) contributes her scholarship to "[How Science Conquered Diphtheria, the Plague Among Children](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science/science-diphtheria-plague-among-children-180978572/)," an article in the October issue of *Smithsonian Magazine*. The article explores the history of medical advances in dealing with deadly childhood illness in the 19th & early 20th century, offering possible reflection on present day public health issues.
