Itamar Avneri's research concerns the science of de-extinction, which has been the focus of rapidly growing attention over recent years. In his research, he examines the development of this science, its modes of operation, and its broader historical, political, and scientific-technological contexts. Among his research objectives are these:
• To examine the historical process that led to the development of the science of de-extinction, and influential historical, social, scientific, and political factors.
• To observe the characteristics of scientists’ work in "The Woolly Mammoth Project" and "The Passenger Pigeon Project."
• To examine, through the case of the science of de-extinction, the historical process through which new concepts of nature, science and technology, and human intervention in nature, develop. In particular, he seeks to examine the processes within which different and even conflicting conceptions confront and influence one another.
