Janaina Freitas' doctoral research in development is carried out in the field of social anthropology and investigates the use of a technology known as preimplantation diagnosis, that is used in the context of in vitro fertilization to identify and select the sex of embryos, as well as the etiologies of intersexuality. The main objective of the research is to map the daily practice of sex diagnosis and cases of intersexuality in embryos, through an ethnographic study in vitro fertilization clinics and laboratories. The study explores the technoscientific practices used for the diagnosis of embryonic sex, in order to analyze what effects these definitions have on the verdicts for the fate of embryos - freezing, discarding or uterine implantation. The importance of this research is theoretically justified by the interest and need for studies about biological sex in the humanities field.
