Nis Primdahl's dissertation investigates the rapid growth and uses of contemplative practices (eg. mindfulness) and their relation to notions of mental health in the education system, specifically public schools. The aim is to analyze and interrogate contemplative practices in schools by emphasizing the significance of selfhood in educational contexts; the study will focus on how ideals and norms of the attentive, mentally healthy, emphatic and present self historically has been and presently is presented to pupils, when contemplative exercises and activities are applied by teachers in classrooms. A key part of the project focuses on how such practices have been legitimized by referring to distinct notions of scientific evidence within discourses demarcated by neuroscience and conceptually exclusive conceptions of mind and subjectivity.
