This course will investigate the practice of history on two registers. First, we will examine theories of history and the archive and their relationship to different forms and structures of knowledge. And second, we will focus on the practical aspects of writing history, beginning with an idea, question, and/or body of materials and culminating in a compelling and persuasive piece of writing. By simultaneously interrogating the what, why, and how of scholarly production, this course will expose you to different approaches to history as well as provide a space to craft an authorial voice, develop skills as an editor, and allow you to give and receive constructive criticism with generosity and humility.
