Subject of Prof. Hui Zhang's Research: A comparative study of ethical governance of synthetic biology in China and the United States
Synthetic biology is an emerging technology of the 21st-century that holds immense promise but also raises significant ethical concerns. Characterized by the “artificial production of life”, it represents a new frontier in biology. Given its potential for both beneficial and harmful applications, understanding the ethical governance of synthetic biology is crucial for its responsible development.
While extensive literature exists on synthetic biology in the United States, American scholars have focused more on the fields of genomics and genetic engineering in China, often overlooking research in synthetic biology within the country. Additionally, there is a notable lack of comparative analysis regarding the ethical governance of synthetic biology between the United States and China.
This research is anticipated to make significant contributions by providing a comparative analysis of synthetic biology’s development and ethical governance between China and the United States. The findings will offer insights for policy recommendations and regulatory frameworks, supporting the responsible and sustainable advancement of synthetic biology.
