Tianyu Fang

Research Interests: Cybernetics and computing; history of the social sciences; technology in the global Cold War; postsocialist China.

Tianyu M. Fang is a writer and researcher. He is a PhD student in the Department of the History of Science at Harvard University. His research examines the rise of information technology and visions of global liberalism in the late 20th century. His current project focuses on the influence of computing infrastructure and cybernetic epistemology on Chinese intellectuals and policymakers during the country’s postsocialist transition from the late 1970s through the 1980s.

In 2026-27, he is an affiliate of the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. Prior to academia, Fang worked in journalism and technology policy. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Stanford University.
